Following is the transcript of the video:
This device removes large blood clots. It's the MegaVac Mechanical Thrombectomy System by Capture Vascular. Large blood clots are especially dangerous. During removal, chunks can break apart and clog smaller arteries downstream. But the MegaVac may offer a safer way.
The key? A wire is inserted through the blockage. It can then deploy, expand, and pull back the blockage.
Dr. Chambers: If you don't take the blood clots out and you put a stent in you oftentimes break up the particles and they go downstream and plug up the little tiny vessels called distal embolization and you don't want that to happen. So the MegaVac has been very successful in preventing that from happening at least in our hands.
Here's how it works.
When a large amount of thrombus, or blood clot forms the MegaVac is guided through the artery to the clot. It then expands. By expanding, it temporarily blocks blood flow in that artery.
This prevents blood from pushing chunks of the clot downstream. Those chunks could damage the artery even more.
It can also help doctors remove more of the clot.
Dr. Chambers: The MegaVac is a better device because it allows more thrombus removal and it prevents forward flow in the artery so no blood clot goes downstream to plug up the little tiny vessels. And the net effect is that you remove a large amount of thrombus quickly and successfully.
The benefits?
It may help prevent permanent heart damage and reduce the severity of a heart attack. It may even stop it completely depending on how soon the clot is removed.
The MegaVac is commercially available and FDA approved.
