Hello 👋

Welcome to Sam Shutt Farming, daily life on the Hill farm

This is Sam and Oliver plus 5 children farming beef sucklers and sheep in the North Yorkshire/Cumbria border area.

We are first-generation farmers, and we've had no help at all to get to where we are now. We are here to show you our life and what we do. I am also here to show new entrance that it is possible to start from scratch. Being strong-willed, determined, and a lot of hard work, you can do it.

We are both from farming background I grew up on a family dairy farm. Milking from a very young age.Working for my uncle when i left school. I've learnt everything from him and grown ever since. I met Oliver when I was 16 he was 15 We started with a few sheep when we met and have built up over the 16 years to were we are now. We took on a 500 acre hill farm in 2019 currently 5 years into the tenancy.

Also, to show women in ag are just as useful

I love you enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck in and your openess to learn
No point having the skills if you're not going to pass them on, my kids and my daughter in law have your spirit, and it gives me tremendous pleasure when they want to learn some of the thing's i know
You're right, men aren't a necessity, with a healthy diet, love honey, we're redundant lol
You should be encouraged not discouraged to learn new skills
Keep up the great videos
Oh an example for you, daughter can lay a patio, hang wall paper and fit vinyl flooring, son can build stone walls, mix n lay concrete aswell as electrics
Daughter in law has worked on her car brakes and changed the engine oil and filter, not only learning to drive but learning to maintain her vehicle
Keep smiling Sam, ya great
Geoff

I bought second hand mushroom cubicles and rubber mats and put them in an existing shed and it worked out ok but make sure to have them the correct width and length or cows won’t lye in them, on the other hand straw bedding might seem expensive but you can calve cows in a straw bedded shed and dung is great fertiliser compared to slurry .

Passed your farm about 09.30 this morning on our way up to Carlisle from Skipton on the train, we gave you a wave. 👋

This is years ago and we only had a small sucker herd of six cows plus calves. We created a concrete step up and managed to get hold of some old Newton Rig dividers. Laid in rubber mats. Later added more ready made portable mushroom cubicles. Our shed wasn’t suitable for mechanisation, so when the daily hand scraping became an ordeal rather than a workout, we sold the herd. We let the cows and calves out on the yard confined with electric fence while cleaning out. We also sprinkled a small amount of sawdust on the dunging area making it a bit less slippery and easier to pick up. The cows and calves stayed clean and enjoyed their beds just as much as dairy cows would. Taking the barrow loads to the muck to the heap was literally pushing shit uphill, that was the killer for us in the end.
Enjoyed seeing the kids play. Jimmy should put on a growth spert with all that muck in his boots. Well done Nancy.

Great video Sam, the cows are looking really good. Your kids are having a wonderful childhood, I love seeing them play .they remind me of my six when they would come in after playing rolling in the mud and falling out of trees😂❤
