As a RN, I’m shocked that they are still dispensing medications in ampules

Most doctors will leave some of the liquid on the bottom, because glass is heavier than water it'll flow down, which means it'll be left in the leftover liquid

If a microscopic sized glass could kill me, I weren't meant for this harsh world.

There is sadly little to no filter needles in the public hospitals in my country, but i hope we never give ampule medicine intravenously

We dont break ampules like that. We break them by making them parallel to ground then striking fast at the marked head with base of bp handle or base of forceps. Hence with speed and and parallel position no glass fragments enters the indicative medicine in an ampule. Thanks

I always wondered about that! I’m an RN now, but when I was 21, I became a veterinary technician. And, we used glass ampules all the time - and we NEVER used a filtered needle then. 1993. Wow, I always wondered about the glass shards going into the medicine! This is scary!

Ampoules have been around for years...we all survived.

What the hell, they dont ever use filtered needle here.

You withdraw from the side .... basically tilting the ampoules while filling the syringe and don't touch the bottom. That saves the needle tip from damage too. Glass, if any settles down.

Most to almost every doctor leaves a little bit left in the ampule. The glass falls to the bottom and they pull the syringe from the top. that’s why when you pull from an ampule you let it settle for 30 seconds to a minute and have it at an angle

One tine during my duty exposure at the hospital when we were preparing meds, I asked about the fragments then my clinical instructor told me that they can't really get into the syringe because they won't fit into the needle, so you don't have to worry about it.
If one were to follow the proper med preparation using syringes, two needles must be used, the first one for aspirating the medication from the ampule or vial, and the other one for injecting it, I think this was for maintaining sterility but... So, you won't have to worry about needle sizes too if you're wondering about how about the needles with wider lumen(the tube of needle), can't the fragments get through. Thus, definitely, the needle for aspirating the medication has a narrower lumen so any unwanted foreign particles will not be aspirated. I guess this just shows how crucial it is to follow the proper procedures. Btw, I'm a nursing student from ph.

I'm a medical student and I've never seen anyone using a filter needle for glass ampules. Nothing has ever happened either. Maybe there are different types of glass ampules, but they do look exactly alike

Filter syringes typically come in a lot of these kits with ampules. That also filters out the glass particles. Not every place needs a filter needle
