Adding the updated PCV system is recommend when possible to prevent sludge and excess oil burning/blow-by. You can change the oil fill, and remove the PCV valves on the heads, then the new system is a direct fit with the updated tubes. This was part of the factory's update to address sludge and oil burning.

Heat is also the enemy of these 4.7's keeping them cool and breathing goes a long way to extending their service life. I have 3 4.7's including one HO I'm installing in a 02 Jeep, the previous one failed due to heat, lack of PCV (sludge) and an improperly functioning power steering driven cooling fan. any one of or a combination of all 3 issues are what kill 4.7's more often than not, provided the oil is changed regularly during its life. Keep 'em cool and clean inside, they last forever with proper maintenance performed regularly!

It's satisfying when you find and correct these little faults.

While I chase a Mistry rough idle with no error codes on my 2000 GC Martin's videos help me to not only locate the parts but also getting them changed with some extra tips along the way. As a owner of a 4.7 I will be following your content. Thank you.

Martin, I love your videos. They have given me the confidence and know how to tackle many jobs on my 02 wj. What I am currently looking for is a video on replacing valve covers. I've seen several of your videos where you simply reference removing the covers and it's usually with a scowl. This unfortunately is my next project. Can you direct me to one of your videos where you tackle this? Thank you for your wealth of knowledge.

Always quality content from Martin.
I was actually searching for your video about the PCV upgrade and found this video. My 4.7L WJ is leaking oil onto the Y-pipe and I need to get it fixed. I thought is was the valve covers, but I'm starting to think I have an oil leak in the PCV system. I replaced both valve cover gaskets a while back (very carefully) but they still leaked. At least I thought it was the valve covers...

Nice job Martin. That was a pretty creative use of a spark plug boot.😂😂

Hey Martin! So I have a quick question... I have a 99 Jeep WJ with the 4.7L, and out of curiosity I pulled off the two hoses on the back of the cylinder heads for the PCV system, while the engine was running, and I felt no pressure what so ever coming out of either of them. I'm personally used to older engines with valve cover breathers that smoke, indicating the release of crankcase pressure, however none on this one. Is this Normal? Sorry for the long question, but much appreciated!

On the 2000 4.7 why would the hose on the back/top of the valve covers going into plastic pvc pipes on both sides have what I can tell is antifreeze but the cylinders have nearly same compression and passed both pressure tests through the spark plug and radiator ?. I have had a issue with water disappearing without leaks or in the crank case or exhaust

I have a 4.7L HO in my 2004 WJ Overland. Am I correct that there is no PCV valve in the HO engine? I can't find it if there is one. There is nothing attached to the oil fill neck on my 4.7L HO.

Thank you for this video. I found this same problem yesterday on my 03 liberty and now I know what happened[

I ran a hose about 6 in back and just cut it off... On the cylinder head in the back I put two nipples that screw into the head and put Edelbrock breather assemblies on it... small filters... It looks good and gets rid of all that ductwork

According to my dealer, my 2006 Commander 4.7 requires a very expensive metal PCV valve that looks very different than yours. I'm guessing that it supersedes the cheaper plastic valve that you are using, possibly due to reliability issues. In fact, the dealer advised me that this metal valve covers most Chrysler products from 2002 to current, including the Viper!

Ohh man. Now I can’t remember if I changed mine last winter or not. I for sure bought one. I think I did replace it but I might do it again. I keep finding that 4.7 sludge in the full tube. I had bought a mopar one too.

Is it in a different location on the 2006 (3rd Gen)? Then you answered my question 2 minutes in.

Hey MartinBuilt
Can you make a video for replacing the: crankcase breather hose assembly on a 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L V8
Part number: 94364GB
I can't see what kind if connectors the hose elbows connect to back there. The middle one connects to the resonator air box on the driver side and two connect in the back down behind the hood.
My WJ is 21 years old and I've broke several plastic tubes and connectors related to the PCV valve and breather tube due to it being very hard and brittle. I'm afraid to yank it off and find the connectors are plastic that break on removal even with Blaster silicone spray
