Isotopes are different atoms of the same element, which have the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons. All elements have the same number of protons, however if their atoms have a different number of neutrons, then they are isotopes.

Carbon-14 and carbon-12 are isotopes as they both have 6 protons, but carbon-14 has 8 neutrons and carbon-12 has 6 neutrons.
