This is what Florida's Capital Looks Like These Days

Downtown Tallahassee is quite a pretty place!

For this dashboard tour, I took the 10 west from Jacksonville. My plan was to drive through downtown Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. I was lucky, as the day was virtually cloudless, which made for a great day to record. It was Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at high noon.

Now Tallahassee is the state capital, but it wasn’t the original state capital. Florida originally had two state capitals - Pensacola was the state’s west capital and St. Augustine was Florida’s east capital. They decided to make Tallahassee the one true state capital in 1824.

Tallahassee became a city in 1821. Today, it’s known for its pretty parks, boutique hotels, its museums and arts and its music. Its located in Florida’s panhandle, only 20 miles north of the gulf of Mexico and just 14 miles south of the Georgia border. Its home to Florida State University, and downtown is known for its stately mansions and live oak trees.

It’s not a big city - there’s only a couple hundred thousand people here.

Tallahassee is actually one of the most beautiful small cities in the country. You are just seeing downtown. The FSU campus right next to downtown is beautiful as are all the canopy roads that stretch north out of downtown. If you had just driven a couple more blocks down College Ave, you would have ended at the front gate to Florida State University and the fountains. Tallahassee is also extremely "hilly" unlike most of the state. I went to school at FSU and loved it. I moved away to ATL in 1995 but I still go back for football games or to visit friends who stayed. Going back to Tally makes me appreciate how clean it is and how well the roads are maintained and traffic lights are synchronized unlike Atlanta which is hell to drive in most of the time. Also, just Florida A&M University is also located in Tallahassee just south of downtown.

I didn't know Tallahassee had a Savannah and New Orleans look to it. While I don't want to mess with summer humidity and temperatures, a part of me can appreciate old Southern architecture and the Spanish moss on the trees.

Early January was a wild time to drive around major cities. I remember I had to be drove to the ER to make sure I wasn't having a stroke, it turns out it was stress related headaches. It served me right for watching too many news.
