Usually, the only time you can change your health insurance coverage is during a plan's Open Enrollment Period. But life doesn't always fit neatly into that narrow window. That's where a Special Enrollment Period, or SEP, comes in. When you have a life change that falls into certain specific categories, you may qualify for an SEP. An SEP gives you a chance to adjust your coverage to match your new reality. There are several events that can open an SEP, including, but not limited to: Involuntarily losing your health coverage, moving, getting married, having a baby or adopting a child. The details of your SEP depend on the type of insurance you have, whether it's individual insurance through the Marketplace, or your works group health plan. Be aware that an SEP is only open for a certain amount of time. In some cases, you may have up to 60 days before or 60 days after the life event to make your changes. If you have insurance through your work, your plan must provide an SEP that lasts at least 30 days. WPS is here to help!
