Venice was a man made miracle of its time

Something else I heard about Venice recently, apparently since the wood pilings are always underwater and the microbes that decompose wood are aerobic (requiring air, as opposed to anaerobic which do not require an air) the wood has not decomposed in the slightest and has, in fact petrified.
So a city that was built on wooden pillars is now resting on stone ones. I thought that was really cool.

The first Venetians were originally Roman Refugees from nearby area escaping Barbarian Invasions.

The whole point of Venice is that it was safe in the swamp from slavers. The irony of it is that Venice became a top city for trading slaves after the practice was banned in other major ports.

It's mind blowing considering this was done centuries ago. This was all done by hand and all calculations and planning was done without computers or AI. Its really something to see and experience. Venice is beautiful and has a character and feeling like no other place on earth.

Whats marvelous is the fact the wood doesn’t rot. It sinks. If you’ve ever heard about venice “sinking” its not from rot, its from slowly being driven deeper into the marsh.

Those wooden pillars calcify under those conditions so the wood will not rot, its almost fossilized. But the weight of the city, slowly drives it deeper into the marsh. Fun fact

Another great feature of Venice is how it it its drinking water back then. Huge areas were carved under the squares at the centre of each island and were filled in with sand. Then, the stone of the square itself was carved at a very shallow angle outwards, meaning all rainwater and sea overflow naturally falls towards the edges, where sewer systems collect it, it is naturally filtered by the sand and it ends up in the wells littered across the city

The engineering and development of Vience is higher quality than a building build 6 months ago! Talk about standing the test of time!!

It makes me wonder, who thought about spending so much extra to build in a swamp. Cities aren't planned at first, and when they are usually the ruler doesn't spend to create a town that requires so much coin on the foundation.
Somehow, sometime, a few people spent extra to build in a swamp and it snowballed into greatness. I want to learn that story now. Thank you for the video.

The same you can say about Tenochtitlan on a lake but 2240 meters above sea level, an amazing engineering project for separate salty water from fresh water !!!

How does the wood stakes under the foundation not rot while soaked in swamp water for hundreds of years.

The canal system and lack of roads also contributed to Venice’s defense against invasion.

The wooden pillars are common for building on soggy soil, all of the old houses in Amsterdam are built on wooden piles as well
