Venice canals almost dry amid low tides and lack of rain

Exceptionally low tides and a lack of rain in Venice has left some of the city's famous canals almost dry. Boats and traditional gondolas, which are used for transportation inside the city, could be seen almost beached in some of the canals.

The problems in Venice are being blamed on a combination of factors – the lack of rain, a high pressure system, a full moon and sea currents. Latest weather forecasts do however signal the arrival of much-needed precipitation and snow in the Alps in coming days, though the country still faces a severe drought this year

This is literally the first time for me to see Venice's canals without water

Lack of water actually produces a far greater threat than flooding in Venice due to the foundations of buildings (a lot of the time they’re still wood) being exposed to the air, making it rot and weaken and inevitably breaking.

This is the right time to clean those canals, they should see that as an opportunity

This city is something out of a parallel universe.., no water, no roads.

The canals smelled bad enough with the water, can't imagine how they'll smell without it.

Venice is tidal, rain has nothing to do with it. Its an island in a sea lagoon, not a river estuary.

I thought the canals would be much more deeper. My expectations has met the reality.

Now they’ll start to mop up some of those unexplained crimes, finding skeletons tied to hollow breeze blocks.
Seriously though, I recall back in the 70s, the disastrous problem of rising water and foundations which were sinking, and the water levels rising above the Istrian stone foundations. I worked there as a young man, cleaning and restoring “Salt “ damage to some of the ancient buildings and sculpture. In more recent years, the problems have increased and Venice is in extreme danger. Now we see that there is a different situation, and hope that it isn’t a regular occurrence. Venice is built on wooden piles, which ought not to dry out, as they would then tend to rot.

We should melt more ice from the poles to fill up the canals

Rainfall is irrelevent. Venice is in the sea not a pond.

A few years ago: "Venice to be under water due to global warming"
Today: "Venice has dried up due to global warming"

I don't see how rain has any impact. The canals are all connected to the sea level, so unless there is a storm surge, rain would have very little impact, other than washing out dirty water, but no impact on water level. Also, these canals are very shallow!

Due to the Turkey/Syria earthquake, many shores in the Mediterranean Sea dropped in Water, you need to check the increasing shore surfaces in Libya, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey.
