It's theorized that he was practicing more human-like actions based off of his programming. There were cute little ads for David8 that pressed that he was more akin to humans with emotions, etc. He states later in the movie to Holloway that he acts in a manner to make humans feel more comfortable in his presence. I think he was acting in accordance to programming, something of "habit" for him.

He did have a human-like (childlike, really) curiosity as well.

I believe he converts it to energy.
it's a newer technology, but today they've created robots/machines that can run on meat/organic food for power :)

It would make sense for David to do that if he's built to be like a human. In the commentary Ridley says all of his all the lifesupport is in his head (like Ash) so maybe Shaw will have to cook meals for him.

What's interesting is that no one talks about this scene. Everyone else is asleep in their tubes. David does not have to pretend he's human to make the other humans feel comfortable as explained later when David puts on a helmet. So why is David eating? Or is this just part of the film's flaws.

Ηe does not need air to breathe but he needs food. His body is not metalic but some kind of artificial organic tissue which needs nutrients to remain fuctional

I guess she don't like the corn bread neither :// He needs to keep the batteries charged so to speak. raises a few theories which I think it what the movie was intended to do. some feel frustrated by it. other intrigued. others indifferent just interested because it's Ridley and Alien saga

Biggest misfire of the whole series of films. They kill off Elizabeth Shaw and focus on a disloyal, treacherous robot who betrays humanity and thinks he is God. Why should we care?
