I remember back in school, my professor told us that yawning was meant to keep us alert. This is why other animals also yawn. The idea being that yawning would force us to refocus or wake up when we are suppose to be alert or on watch. When someone does this, others nearby would also do so in the attempt to stay awake as well. This is mostly instinctual.

In my mind, consciousness is pretty much just a manifestation of multiple pieces of information and brain processing coming together. I don't think it exist in any physical way, it is more like an experience.

The appendix I have heard is kind of a refuge for microbes that helps us restore our microbiome after something like an infection or food poisoning.
I have heard that people who have it removed tend to have more digestive tract issues and take longer to recover, although I have no idea if any of this is true in any way.

Remember the guy who had a concussion, woke up and was able to play the piano with precision and skill even though he had never touched a piano before?

In the case of the appendix; studies have shown that after a "cleansing of the gut" (diarrhea) bacteria levels return to normal faster in people who have their appendix, so it's like it keeps an emergency supply of your gut bacteria which is kinda cool.

Honestly I think that the human brain is so complicated that I can't even begin to understand it. There have been cases where people have had concussions and woke up speaking new languages perfectly when they had no ties to the countries that speak said languages.

I find that to be such a beautiful thing: we are gifted with so many questions that science will never run out of new things to reveal.
