In the 80s and 90s my friends and I loved doing crazy stunts. We hadn't heard of the terms "free-running" or "parkour" yet. We just called it "pulling a Jackie Chan".

What Jackie Chan did in his movies will literally **never**’ be recreated.
No actor has the guts to do what he did and no studio would accept the risk these days.

When I was a kid I thought his movies were just amazing.
Now as an adult, I realize that what he created is timeless.

Imagine how strong this dude was physically and mentally. Huge respect.

One of the things that I always respected about Chan is that, often, at the end of the movie during the credits, Chan would have the outtakes of all the times his stunts in the film went wrong.
Showing kids that the stunts, while entertaining, were very difficult & often dangerous; and went wrong many times before the "perfect one" got captured on film.
Another bit of humanity which really infused much of Chan's work.

Jackie himself on many interviews has mentioned that back in those days in china, the budgets for those movies were so low, if you didn’t want to do any of the stunts you would get fired from the film. There were no support lines for anything like tom cruise has. When he jumps from buildings, he’s said, “Run, jump, land, hurt, hospital!”

Jackie Chan is the "Founder" of Pakour in the way that Bruce Lee is the "Founder" of MMA. They didn't invent those brands. However, their psychological approach to the use of the human body inspired so many people to do great things.

I love how he does all these stunts with this expression of, "I have no idea what I'm doing." So many of his best stunts are of his characters frantically trying to get away from something or desperately trying to survive being outnumbered, and they never come across as cocky or even particularly confident. It makes him surprisingly relatable given that so few of us could survive the things he puts himself through.

The fact that he replays all his stunts in the credits allowed us to really appreciate his craft and skill. I dont think he would have gotten as much credit without it. Glad he did. The guy is an absolute legend and will never be surpassed

Jackie is almost unanimously recognized as one of the greats, and I'd say he's still woefully underrated. An absolute legend.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie Chan in 1989. He did a live interview in Chicago. After the interview, He actually hung around and talked with me and my friends. He even took a picture with me. He stated that when he fell off the castle wall, if the camera man had just bumped him, he would have never got hurt. But part of his camera crew was Ukrainian and they did not understand his stunts ( the camera man was trying to protect the camera ). His regular film crew are also stuntmen themselves. I hated that I never got the chance to ask him about working with Bruce Lee. Meeting and talking with him was awesome.

Before “parkour” was popularized, Jackie had me jumping and flipping off of everything through the 90s and up until the 2010s. He made action movies for active people.

I love the fact he puts all the bloopers at the end of his movies, which really shows you how hard these stunts are. I had the honour of meeting Jackie many years ago and he really is as nice as he seems in interviews, a truly nice guy!

One fun thing is that regardless of if one consider Jackie as "the founder of parkour" or not, in an interview they showed Jackie some parkour clips in 2 times to let him guess whether a certain action would be successful or not and he got all of them right and gave explanations on how he understands it.
So he understands parkour regardless of what we think.

Jackie Chan needs to be considered the father of Parkour. David Belle founded Parkour in 1990. But Jackie Chan was doing it since the 60s.

But Buster Keaton should be considered the Godfather of Parkour since he was doing it since 1917.

Jackie Chan is the king of parkour. No if's or and's about it. Respect the man. What he did was mind blowing. The risk he took and the bones he has broken from doing all of his stunts and he kept coming back. This man is a legend.

Most people forget that Jackie spent his childhood learning how to do theatre combat and actual martial arts and acrobatics in a Chinese Theather group. So a lot of his early works showed off more of the acrobatics and less parkour. As he got older and started to appear more in western cinema he focused more on the martial arts & parkour than arcobatics.

And the amazing thing about him was that not only was he this incredible athlete, he was performing his feats with comedic timing. In this respect he was not only the father of Parkour but also the grandson of Buster Keaton. Or simply a practitioner of Chinese Kungfu, which today is mainly performance and less combat.

Jackie took the phrase "be like water, formless" to the next level.

"Is that real?" You better believe it mate, everything he done was real. And this free running or what ever its called now, yes Jackie invented it. And no he did not do almost all his stunts, he done them all.

If you asked Jackie Chan if he considers himself father of parkour, he would probably tell you no, Buster Keaton is.
