Dolphins having names has been a known fact for a good 10 to 15 years now if I'm not mistaken. Basically, while in the process of recording dolphin vocalisations it was noticed as more calves were born, matured & had their own calves etc. that the signature whistles of newborns were carried throughout their lives.
As technology improved, the scientists who have spent most their adult lives studying wild dolphin populations, realised not only were these whistles used by the individuals themselves, but other dolphins would also use specific signature whistles & the corresponding dolphin/s that they belonged to would respond.
I believe there is one researcher who recorded many signature whistles of the dolphins she studied & one day tried playing a few specific ones over an underwater microphone, with the result that the Dolphins whose signature whistles/names where played, responded.
I'm pretty sure some of this research was done by a scientist who is trying to crack the Dolphin language code (she even made an underwater keyboard/computer type thing containing dolphin phrases, that she could play through an underwater microphone as a way of communicating if my memory serves). It was really interesting stuff.

Crows are incredibly intelligent. They have language, can recognize faces, even faces of humans, and communicate dangers to their offspring passed down throughout generations. The have funerals for their dead, can create art and can be vindictive to those who offend them.
