Calibrating a refractometer off RODI can give you innacurate salinity readings by as much as .002-.003. Even sybon’s instruction manual says if you are reading for salinity you must calibrate using their saline solution set to 1.026. I used to calibrate off RODI but will never do that again after seeing the swings myself.

I’ve had my Hanna Checker for over a year and still haven’t needed to calibrate it. I do test it in the pouches and compare it to a calibrated refractometer.

A common thing I find is the salinity rises when people bring a water sample in a small container like that. So they probably have a different parameter in the actual tank.

My every day meter is the Milwaukee and I use the Tropic Marin floating hydrometer to verify the Milwaukee's readings. The TM needs no calibration. But it is fragile.
