Bizet: Toreador Song from the Opera Carmen | The Greatest Arias of All Time

One of the greatest arias of all time. "Toreador Song", also known as the "Toreador March", is the popular name for the aria "Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre" (I return your toast to you) from the French opera Carmen, composed by Georges Bizet in 1875 to a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. In it, the bullfighter (French: toréador) Escamillo sings about the various situations in the bullfighting arena, the cheering of the crowd, and the glory that comes with victory. Here, the aria is sung by Baritone Andrei Kymach at the Opera Gala for the German AIDS Foundation 2023 in Bonn. The Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and the Opera Choir of the Theater Bonn are conducted by Dirk Kaftan.

"Votre toast“ or “Toreador Song” has been featured in many different genres of pop culture. For example, the aria was performed on the children’s show Sesame Street and in an episode of Doctor Who. It was also featured in the video game Five Nights at Freddy's. And since the mid-1990s, “Toreador Song” has been used in Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship while champagne is sprayed on the podium.
Andrei Kymach first studied philosophy at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kiev, then graduated in singing from the Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kiev and was a member of the Kherson Philharmonic Society. In 2018, he went to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and made his big-stage debut as Don Carlos in Dargomyzhsky's opera The Stone Guest. In 2019, Andrei Kymach was the first to win the prestigious BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.
