The terror bird was more intelligent, faster and agile than sabretooth . Plus it had insanely powerful legs with knives like claws that it would likely use to kick the cat and tear open its belly with a single kick.

Actually, the terror birds are solitary while Smilodon lived in groups, like lions.

3:37 Sabertooth cats had anything but a strong bite

Edit: Also, Biting the bird on the leg would risk having its fragile fangs broken as the bird kicked

Edit 2: ok I Saw the sabertooth fossil that shows it piercing the skull of another sabertooth. And I know the sabers can take upward and downward forces quite well, but it fangs certainly can't handle the force of a Phorusrachid kick, which would absolutely break its fangs if not kill it

Sabertooths were scary bastards but the Terror bird is a complete different level of Predator

In my opinion, I think Titanis would most likely win (on a 1v1), because first it towered over Smilodon (Titanis was 2.5m/8’2” tall and Smilodon was 1.2m/4ft tall) and Smilodon had a weak bite force (less powerful than a lion’s) and its sabers were quite fragile and Smilodon brought its prey down with its body weight of 400kg and hit its prey at the windpipe, and it would be very difficult for Smilodon to successfully bring down Titanis and bite its windpipe, and Titanis could easily peck Smilodon to death.

Some species of sabertooths are also thought to have hunted in packs. The sabertooths hunting strategy was more like a wrestler, they hunted big prey animals, like bison and mammoth, and where able to drag the bison to the ground to deliver a killing blow. The terror bird, like all other birds, had hollow bones. This would be that the sheer strength of a sabertooth would crush and mortal wound the bird. The only way the bird would be able to counter would be to use their superior height and leg length to deliver distant kicks or peak down with their beaks and deliver a few quick, powerful hits to the cats head. But if the sabertooth was close enough for the bird to do this then all the cat would have to is lunch past the beak and tackle the bird. At that point the bird might be broken and all the cat would have to do it deliver a fatal stab with its canines to a vital part of the bird, like the throat.

"There is no such thing as a saber-toothed tiger. The correct name for these beasts is saber-toothed cat."

I think in a 1v1 fight the terror bird would win.

What if a velociraptor fought a terror bird ?

I reckon the smilodon could jump onto its back carefully avoiding the legs if it gets round them and the grip the throat and wrestle it to the floor (well actually smilodon was heavier so the bird would collapse)

All the terror bird would have to do is get a direct (pickaxe swing) on the top of the sabers head or the back of its neck/spinal cord. I could see the saber lunging forward with a quick swipe while the terror bird flinches back and reels it’s head for a blow the first misses then the saber swipes the terror birds face dazing it a bit. The saber would then go in for a lunge but would recieve and unexpected kick from the terror birds slender but sturdy legs. The force would be enough to knock the saber on over giving the terror bird the chance to get a direct hit before the saber got its bearings back, after the first hit it would be like getting a concussion in football, all the terror bird would need to do is hit it one more time and that’s that. Really it’s the height, the terror bird has a clear cut view on all angles of attack while the saber is stuck looking over the looming figure.

It actually has been recently proven that saber tooth did hunt in packs

It’s been thought that a living relative, the seriema of Florida, gets their slamming technique from terror birds. They use this a lot on small lizards, mice and anything else smaller than itself.

I suppose you would need to consider the intelligence of the animals in question, the bird may attack instinctively, the sabre tooth may weigh out the risk vs gain, whilst stalking its opponent from a distance. Probably the winner would be the one who struck hard first

Even if the Saber Tooth did not have its tusks it still has its arms with retractable claws just as the Terror Bird has more then just it's beak it also has non retractable claws

The DireWolf would actually beat a sabertooth cat if they ever fought each other they were natural enemies but they never fought directly
