Welcome to another episode of Trailmakers! Today I want to build a supersonic train for the first time! It must have a minimum of 3 segments, and of course, break the sound barrier. Can it be done?

About Trailmakers:

In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.

Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!

Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.

Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.

Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.

Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.

Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

The wobble at high speed can be explained, I believe, with some vibration mechanics.
I am studying (well, was, until your video came out) for this exact exam right now.

I'll spare you the math, but what happens when you have a symmetrical airfoil (or two wedges, as you have there) and it starts to vibrate is that the dampening effect increases, while the stiffness of the system lowers as velocity increases.
In other words, while the energy is dumped (dampening effect) faster, the system has no "incentives" to go nack to its stable position (that's what stiffness is, think of a spring).

A system with positive dampening and negative stiffness is inherently unstable, there's nothing that can be done except increasing the initial stiffness (longer carts might help).

It's not a bug, it happens in real life too, it's just physics.

After seeing that map, my immediate thought was that you have to do a jousting tournament for multiplayer!

5:05 Theyre space thrusters, of course theyre more space efficent

I think the only logical place this series can end up is making an ornithopter that can break the sound barrier.

Did you know that, between segments, you can use the shield parts to remove the aerodynamics while sacrificing minimal amounts of complexity? It's a strategy I tend to use, and ot works like a charm!

Minimize thrust in the back cars because they’re squishing the front. Your first 3 car train with thrust was near to perfect but you had thrust the back overpowering the front. :)

I love the content, Scrap Man! I do have a couple of ideas for a possible video to do.
1. Devolution fight with few limits where after every round, the loser can designate a single block that must be replaced or eliminated on all vehicles.
2. Large-Scale brawl over the full island with no power core limit, but every use of a vehicle subtracts from a total power core limit (maybe 100), meaning that a simpler vehicle can be respawned more times than a more complicated one. Last one standing wins.

You could put skis on the front and sides to prevent the speed wobbles like a real life monorail

I love that you use that huge map’s idea of this hover train and turned it into a supersonic version. Keep up the good work :D

Shields on the back of the front car and on the front of the rear car would prevent red arrows!

I thought trailer hinges were the biggest factors in the instability. At those speeds they start to visibly operate like springs, so it would add vibrations and stray forces into the system. But you got there in the end, so it doesn't really matter.
Love your experimentation videos, where you try to achieve a goal and constantly refine the approach 👍

The reason your vehicle is lifting up at high speeds is because of air/wind resistance above your center of gravity.

Your next Merch idea, Scrap: 'With Enough Thrust ... Anything is Possible'.
An F-15 image keeps the Tee family friendly.

1:40 agreed, 3 cars is the minimum train. 2 is just a trailer😂

5:14 only need 1 attachment point. I usually have 2 block of attachment per 4 blocks of thruster.

Video idea - make train which can change tracks by jumping from one track to another

9:15 the weight balance is way off between the two segments.. making the back as heavy as the front would probably help with stability

I wonder if getting rid of the hover pads in the center of the build, and replacing it with skis or some parts to create a sort of ground effect possibly make it more stable.
