Sam Moore and Joshua Ledet perform "Soul Man" at In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul accompanied by the White House band.

"In Performance at the White House: Memphis Soul" is a music event hosted by President and Mrs. Obama to celebrate the memorable soul sounds from the mid- to late-1960s that came from Memphis, Tennessee and legendary labels like Stax-Volt Records, that featured artists such as Eddie Floyd, Mavis Staples, William Bell, Sam Moore and many more. Memphis was a segregated city in the 1960s where many whites and blacks nonetheless came together to make soulful music, a mix of gospel and potent rhythmic grooves — known today as "Memphis Soul."

The program featured performances by Alabama Shakes, William Bell, Steve Cropper, Al Green, Ben Harper, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Joshua Ledet, Sam Moore, Charlie Musselwhite, Mavis Staples and Justin Timberlake, with Booker T. Jones as music director and band leader. The First Lady also hosted a special daytime event for students, an interactive student workshop title "Soulsville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul. In this workshop, students explored the elements of soul and gospel that helped contribute to the genre's unique sound.

"In Performance at the White House" is a series of musical events created to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation's most famous home.

An American Southern Soul and R&B legend, Sam Moore was part of the historic Memphis soul duo Sam & Dave, with Dave Prater Jr. With hit songs such as "Soul Man," the duo inspired The Blues Brothers personas and movie. A GRAMMY Award winner, Moore has also been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Joshua Ledet placed third in the eleventh season of American Idol in 2012 and is known for his church-bred brand of old school soul music.
