Indy looking at a picture of his dad. I didn't see the clip on YouTube so decided to upload it.

I love how John Williams added the old Holy Grail theme for Henry Sr. It makes it even more nostalgic and emotional.

"First Dad, then Marcus" you can tell by his tone he misses them, and their passing still has a hold on him.

For all the hate this movie gets, this really is one of my favorite Indy scenes. it really displays Indy's mindset in a very realistic way: the man gets let go from his job for BS reasons - he doesn't fall into a state of moaning and feeling sorry for himself, his first instinct is to carry on and keep on doing what he loves. One of the many reasons why the character is so timeless and iconic.

Sir Sean Connery was approached for a cameo appearance as Henry Jones, Sr., Indiana's father, but he turned it down, finding retirement too enjoyable. George Lucas later stated that, in retrospect, it was good that Jones, Sr. did not appear, as it would disappoint the audience when he would not come along for the adventure. Harrison Ford also joked that he was getting old enough to play his own father, so Sean wasn't needed anymore. He supposed to appeared on Indiana's wedding but it never had happened. Rip Sean❤

Allowing Henry Sr. to die peacefully was the final kindness of the Holy Grail.

I like how they pay tribute to Sean Connery's character Professor Henry Jones Sr. Sadly life imitated art last year when the great Sean Connery passed away! Fun Fact: Connery was offered a cameo role in Crystal Skull but he respectfully declined because he had retired from acting! Last Crusade was always. Y favorite Indiana Jones movie!

"We seem to have reached the age where life stops giving us things and starts taking them away."

A tragic truth...

Indy lost his father and his friend Marcus, and then 12 years later, Indy lost his son Mutt.

Note the inclusion of the Holy Grail Theme as he sees his father’s photo

This is one of two moments in the film, that highlight Indy’s arc in the film and the the saga as a whole.

The key to eternal life is literally calling out to Indy, but he’s too sad and cynical to hear it.

The 2nd moment, is then the head of Marcus’s statue falls off and lands in the KGB guy’s lap.

There’s a brief comedic beat between Indy and Mutt of disapproval,
Followed by a lingering shot of Indy looking back with sadness.

Indy believes in artifacts, not so much the faiths they surround, as faith isn’t something he can touch.
So he views death as the end.

Marcus literally interferes from beyond the grave to help Indy out,
And Indy can’t see it for what it is.
A miracle.

The entire film, Indy experiences divine intervention, protecting him and his loved ones,
Surviving things they shouldn’t,
All so he gets to where he needs to go,
So he can get back on the right path.

But our hero can’t see these interventions as anything special, because he’s so caught up in his own head.

It’s after he sees the Alien ship,
That Indy remarks:

“Somewhere, you’re grandfather is laughing.”

For the first time, Indiana Jones warms to the idea that there’s more than material existence, and that his father and friends aren’t gone.

We end in a church, as Indy finds his faith once more, and with it, his illumination.

One of my favorite scenes from the entire series - Broadbent's comment that 'we seem to have reached the age where life stops giving us things and starts taking them away' and Ford's reaction gets me every time.

I know that The Crystal Skull wasn't great, but even if it was ten times worse than people claim it was, it would still be worth it because we got this scene.

I believe from 1:15 to 1:24 Indy is thinking ‘After all these years of turmoil between us, dad, we were finally able to be a father & son for once in our extravagant lives. Yet, as you said to me in the zeppelin leaving Germany, “you left just when you were becoming interesting.” ‘
RIP Sir Sean Connery
You were more than the Original James Bond as well as the father of Indiana Jones, you were the man who inspired many generations of film watchers to seek out the most legendary of adventures.

It's sad, first Denholm Elliott (1992), then Sean Connery (2020).
