As an american learning Mandarin Chinese, I can tell you with absolute authority that translating words with an app is only a tiny part of communication. You must understand the psychology and culture of the people you are attempting to communicate with. Using a phone app in a battle to try to command troops with any level of functionality is essentially a dead end, as in actually dead.

So, basically it seems the Russians got themselves a lot of "interns" to handle. No worries then.

The cynical cruel attitude of russian and nk leaders towards their people is deeply disturbing. Very sad

The special forces will be trained as drone pilots, the regular conscripts will be trained as drones. Brilliant!

So we see that the great experiment, ‘ can we get two xenophobic and racist armies to work together’, has gone exactly as everyone expected.

Korean: "I was told we were here as observers and specialists."
Russian: "You were not misinformed, now form up into platoons."
Korean: "What are we supposed to observe or specialize in as a combat unit??"
Russian: "You observe the front line down your rifle's iron sight, and you specialize in pulling the trigger when a Ukrainian walks in front of it."

The difference between DPRK Special Forces and DPRK regulars is that the Special Forces have Strike Gum.

Really? Hiring starving soldiers who can’t speak the language sounds really smart to me.

They were never meant to do anything but absorb ukrainian ammo. Has that not been made very clear by now?

I work with a Guatemalan guy doing pest control and moisture barriers and related stuff. I'm American but I speak Spanish fluently and I'm the only one who can talk Freddy but everyone loves working with him. He's awesome. Great worker. He and the other guys use phone apps to translate when I'm not on the same job site. I have watched and listened to them is apps too.
My point is that I can't imagine using translation apps on phones in friggin combat with rifles firing, shouting, maybe incoming mortars, whatever. It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. 1 in 30 is a terrible ratio of translators and troops, or it seems like it to me at least. The military didn't want me because of my eyes so I'm not a veteran and I don't know what ratios are normally used.

NK soldiers are small and thin due to rampant malnourition. If you have no muscle mass, you can't carry equipment needed in the field (rifle, ammo, backpack with spare clothing, medkit, rations etc). If you have no fat reserves, you don't have the endurance needed to march, fight, dig etc.
For example, in the later parts of Pacific campaign in WW II, chronically malnourished Japanese soldiers were able to throw a grenade only half a distance that was considered normal before the war.

I’m baffled how anyone in Russia or North Korea think this is a good idea.

The russobots have been myseriously quiet sinced the North Koreans joined in. Guess even they are struggling to frame this in a good light.

Communication will be a nightmare for sure.
Most of North Koreans only speak 1 language.

I agree, it will be a side by side thing with 1 russian and 1 NK officer. I heard about 500 oddicers from North Korea, some really low ranking, and they will put the lowest ranks in command of the 30 men units, and then they will learn from the russian commanders.

I think, the North Korean troops are just there to be meat, to let the officers practice, and that's their main purpose. I think, the thing, that's important for the north coreans, is their officers. They will throw away the soldiers, and bring the 500 officers back to North Korea, so they can train other officers. Maybe they even rotate officers, and send more North Korean troops. They use the troops to train as many officers as possible on a real battlefield.
