Deployment of North Korean troops in Russia ‘a definite sign of Putin’s weakness’ | DW News

Ukraine says that North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia's western Kursk region -- to back up Russian troops on the war's frontline. That's according to Ukraine's military intelligence service. Kursk is where Ukrainian forces staged a cross-border incursion into Russian territory back in August, seizing a chunk of territory. This comes as Russian lawmakers ratified a defense treaty with North Korea that pledges 'mutual assistance' if either country is attacked.
Earlier on Thursday President Vladimir Putin on Thursday did not deny the presence of North Korean troops in Russia. The US said 3,000 North Korean troops are in Russia -- and has described the deployment as 'very serious.'
DW spoke with John Kirby, White House National Security Communications Advisor in Washington. Further analysis from Mikhail Alexeev, Russian expert at San Diego State University, and we spoke with Aidan Foster Carter of Leeds University on what’s in it for North Korea.
