Bear in mind that this was his first hit, Elton John and the lyricist, Bernie Taupin, were sharing bunkbeds in Elton's mom and stepdad's apartment in their early days, so I think the "don't have much money/buy a big house" line rings true.
As for suggestions, there are some great, deeper cuts like "Crazy Water" (since you like the faster pace), or "High Flying Bird", that don't get enough attention. "Grey Seal" is a really cool song off the hit machine that was Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.

Bernie Taupin has stated that when he hears this song in the grocery store he hears how young and naive the lyrics sound, but when he hears the song performed by Elton backed with his full band he falls in love with the song all over again

THIS IS MY SONG! I was around 3 yrs old and my sister was a teenager when this song came out. She would open the album cover, put her arm around me and follow along with the lyrics printed inside as the song played. I couldn't read so it didn't make sense, but to this day this is MY SONG. I've never forgotten the lyrics or the memory. I'm 53 now and I get a little nostalgic and emotional when here it. How such a beautiful song could be written by two different people in two totally different places at different times is mind-blowing.

For me, the best performance of this song is from his Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It was right before he had throat surgery and wasn't sure if he'd be able to sing again. There's one point where he starts belting and the conductor turns to him, completely surprised. And one of my fave vocal performances from him is "Live Like Horses" which he did with Pavarotti. The live version, it's amazing.

I was introduced to this as a kid because my older cousin was obsessed with Moulin Rouge and played the songs all the time. They did a cover of this and I loved it so much. Haven't heard it in a while. Now I want to rewatch that movie.
