Using contemporary souces (primarily the eyewitness account of Roger Martin of Long Melford in Suffolk) this video examines the medieval English ceremonial of Palm Sunday, including the blessing of palms and the Eucharistic procession, a unique part of the English medieval ceremonial.

What a treasure to have an eyewitness account. It must have been one of the most exciting events of the year, one which all the parishioners looked forward to.

I love it when we hear directly an account written at the time. I was very fortunate to have a brilliant history teacher, who didn't just teach the subject - he lived and breathed it, spending his weekends and often his holidays in the diocese and county archives, reading everything he could find (he could read Middle English perfectly) and passing on any interesting findings.
What he taught me was that history comes alive when it's about _people_ and their lives. In my local church's records, dating from the 1300's, a certain man was mentioned because he was helped financially by the parish on a number of occasions. It was clear that this man couldn't work to support himself, and after some headscratching over a recurring dialect phrase, my teacher realised this poor man must have suffered from Parkinsons Disease.
I think all of today can relate to the man and imagine his life even after 700 years.

Lovely video - thank you! Small pedantic detail (!): at 12:20 I think the priest is shown wearing a Chasuble, not a Cope? Cheers and please keep up the great work. Love this channel, which somehow I stumbled across during the Queen's funeral and have been glued to ever since

How wonderful! Though the scattering of the singingcake hosts feels particularly weird to my 21stC Catholic mind.
Would love for Jonathan Pageau to watch this and do a symbolic analysis!

Fascinating as usual Allan, thank you. How does this - the blessing of the 'palms', the procession, the songs etc - differ from contemporary non-Orthodox practice?
