We were so poor we didn't have toilet paper. We used your thumb!

We were so poor we didn’t even have the motor

Those whistles were invented during the pandemic when toilet paper was impossible to find.

I just loosen the spark plug, you’ll hear the air through the threads, then an extension though the hole when your close to find where the piston settles at the top

We were so poor we had to use the markings on the block and crank.

On an engine with the spark plugs on top just pull a plug and stick a length of wire coat hanger or something similar down the hole. When it stops getting taller you've hit TDC.

This does not find TDC, all it does is tell you when you are on the compression stroke. If you are trying to set your timing indicator to read 0* at TDC this is useless.

Let's not confuse TDC with compression stroke, this guy is looking at the timing marks to find TDC and if you can't find the compression stroke looking at the rocker arms you probably shouldn't play with hand tools

I've done that with a piece of plastic to find compression and then put a long thin screwdriver in the hole and brought the piston to the top for the last 30 years as a mechanic and have never had a problem making a motor run and run smooth it works every time

Find #1 cylinder. Rotate crankshaft and watch the valves. When the intake valve is closed. That means the piston will compress that air fuel mixture.Watch the piston(bore scope helps) come to the top and starts to move down. Back the piston up to the top. That's when it is top dead center. Now you have stricking paper when needed. Poo POW. LOL

Valve cover off over Cylinder 1, Long Copper Wire (because copper is less likely to scratch the pistons) into the Cylinder, make sure when the Wire pushes to the top that both valve lobes are pointing away from the Valves and the valves are closed ...that's Basic TDC - but you need to make sure the cam and crank are lined up either way but that will get you Started

Learned this in 1987 when I interned for AC Nutter

My dogs go crazy angry when they hear the tdc whistle on videos

I always just use a peice of welding wire and place it down in the hole. When it stops moving up you got it.

I timed my engine at top dead center by looking at the position of the pistons😂

I think its way easier to just remove the plug and stick a long screwdriver in the sparkplug hole. Turn the motor over till the screwdriver stops coming up. Doesn't get much simpler and cheaper than that.

We were poor and did the same thing, but we reused that TP in the outhouse

TDC can either be the compression stroke, or the exhaust stroke, if you do not have the rocker cover removed to see the rocker arm position, using a probe, such as a long 1/4" coach bolt with the threaded end cut off, then rounded (the big head prevents it falling in the cylinder if you drop it) when it ceases to rise you have TDC, HOWEVER, if you want to know which stroke it is, place a 1/2" piece of heater hose over the spark plug hole (remove your probe first), put your mouth on the other end of the pipe and blow air down the pipe. If it's the exhaust stroke, you will hear the air exiting via the open exhaust valve, if you cannot blow any air into the cylinder, it's the compression stroke, and all valves are closed. Simple method that saves removing the rocker covers and allows you to position your distributor (remember those) on the firing/compression stroke.

12" 3/8 extension. Put it down the spark plug tube, touching the piston head. Watch as the piston pushes it out. If the 3/8 extension won't fit, use a straight piece of wire hanger.
