My theory for FOP is that kids need to be selfish to keep Fairies a secret. Every big wish that effects multiple people is too noticeable, and tends to backfire big time to have to reset the status quo. It's why kids don't wish for world peace, no hunger or homelessness, or end to diseases. People would figure out the truth about Fairy God Parents.
