A girl complemented my dress and said it was very "demure" and I was so confused 😭 like it was a pastel dress but it had a low chest-line and I was wearing a push-up bra, so I wouldn't call it modest? But I was also confused when people started using "coquette" to describe things that weren't... being an English major is fun because you know old vocabulary but you get confused when people bring it back and change the meaning/application.

For those whose parents and teachers failed them: look up a word if you don't know what it means and can't figure it out yourself. Or, if you are in conversation, just polietly ask the person who used it to explain what it means (I have both done this and been asked myself). If it is internet slang use Urban dictonary (with caution). Taking a few seconds to figure out what a word means goes a long way to expanding your vocabulary over time (and it gets easier the more words you know).
