I don’t think people understand just how groundbreaking and impressive this was for 1963 especially for a movie that began production in the 50s no CGI no special effects little to no green screen all real

The clever design of her seat. When she is lifted down the stairs the bottom tilts and keeps her in the same level as she was, brilliant. The art director was really good he knew physics.

She was smart. Going big, showing off her power/wealth, then bowing before Caesar raises him up in the eyes of the people.

The budget for the movie was 5 million dollars and they went over budget by 44 million. This was in 1963.
The wink gets me everytime!

When I worked in private hospice care, I had a tiny little lady client who had sight in only a portion of one eye. My agency only allowed us to wear minimal makeup & no perfume ( for obvious reasons & it was fine...). I basically wore chapstick & eyeliner, so I felt human. One day, this sweet 98 year old asked me if she could call me Cleo! I realized she probably only saw my eyeliner & then she said that Clopatra was her favorite movie & if I didn't like it, she wouldn't call me that. Of course I let her! It was an honor & I loved her. If it made her happy, then I was overjoyed. She went on to live another 3 years. Her husband was a little younger than her & he's very much alive. I still call him to wish him a happy holiday he always tells me how he misses his wife & was grateful she had me, her "Cleo" 🥹. Tysm Mae, this was a sweet reminder for me...

Cleopatra lived closer to modern day than ancient Egypt

This film is actually famous for being a total financial disaster, way too big of a budget to make something too long and convoluted for the average viewer, but it’s definitely interesting.

It has as much to say about the history of the film industry as it does about Egypt.

Edit: For those confused on the finances, the film was released in 1963. While doing well in the box office, it still lost money, not breaking even until 1966 when the TV Broadcast Rights were sold for $5, 000, 000.

The film was such a colossal loss that the studio had to sell land to make up for it.

Practical effects are so much better than CGI!!!

I miss when everything wasn’t cgi I know some computer graphics are cool but all the props from films like this or even Star Wars were so much cooler to me. All the time and effort they put into the scenery was amazing.

As an Egyptian.. nothing represents the glory of egypt in cinema like this scene

Another great moment in the movie is when she's rolled up in the carpet. They just don't make movies, or movie stars, like this anymore. I loved it!
