seeing as they lured their victims with their voices, them being birds makes WAY more sense
edit: i did not think i had to explain this but. guys. birds sing. sirens lured sailors by singing. thats why it makes more sense than them being mermaids.

This is completely true. When the sailors heard the siren’s voice they were tricked into thinking it was a beautiful woman singing to them. It’s like a spell, a hallucination

Actually you’re sorta correct. They originally were avian humanoids(if you don’t take into account they were nymphs in Persephone’s court, and turned to bird hags to find her by Demeter story, ) but after losing to the Muses in a singing competition, Hera stripped them of their wings and used their feathers to make crowns for the victors; tossing their lifeless bodies into the sea. Poseidon saw pity upon them and granted them a second chance at life turning them into serpent like fish humanoids who would sing for him and protect his domain.

What if Harpys and Sirens got mixed up and we’ve just been calling them the wrong thing this whole time

Despite how beautiful they look with feathers, I think them being half a murderous fish is so much creepier yet magical.

This would actually make way more sense as sirens lured sailors in with their beautiful voices, and mermaids have scratchy voices to chase them away from their domain/home.

Ok so basically sirens were creepy bird monsters, they were supposed to look terrifying and not in any way beautiful or majestic. What was majestic was their song; they would lure in sea men in order to eat them. Their voices were so majestic, that would cause them to hallucinate and perceive them as beautiful mermaids, and once they were finally able to snap out of the trance, it was already too late, they were in the sirens’ grasps.

Merfolk and greek sirens are completely seperate mythological creatures. First known myth of mermaids is found in Syria 1000BCE while greek sirens are a part of "modern" greek mythology which happened approx. 700BCE.
This is just a little explanation if anyone got confused. The video talkss about the term siren (im pretty sure) and the word siren id an adjective to arousing strong interest. The reason we call mermaids sirens today is bcs the terms got mixed in Latin translation of greek language.

The Sirens in Greek mythos were actually formerly handmaidens of Persephone but after her abduction, Demeter gave them wings to aid the search for her.

The difference between a siren and a harpy is that sirens are usually more human with feathered limbs. Harpies are birds with human heads. Sirens are more intelligent and can sing. While harpies are more animal and can’t sing.

They are still so beautiful. And it also makes sense how birds, with their beautiful chirping can brighten a day like that siren birds Can attract humans. There might be the mimickry birdie, the rooster birdie, nightingale birdie, etc. By the way, they remind me of harpies? Are they one?
