INSTRUMENTAL ON BAASIK’S CHANNEL:

This song is a prequel to our song “#Insane” and explores Alastor’s (semi-cannon) origin story! As many of you may know, I was the singing voice of #Alastor on the #HazbinHotel pilot episode, so it felt only fitting to hire Luximus (known for her work on #HelluvaBoss) to animate this music video!
Hope you enjoy!

CREDITS:

Written by Gabe & Nate brown (Black Gryph0n & Baasik)

Additional animation and compositing by Andrew Duemig

Hey pal, hey friend, hey buddy
Why so sad, so downright unhappy?
That’s not my cup of tea

You know that this could be
Your last day here on earth so buddy, please
Won’t ya smile just for me?

My dear, my dear, no you don’t have to cry
That ain’t a pretty legacy to leave behind
Stop and smell the roses while you’ve got the time
Pretty soon you’ll be pushing up daisies where the sun don’t shine
Pretty soon I’ll be pushing up daisies where the sun don’t shine

You know I just gotta say
That you might not have a lot of time to waste
So lose that long face

None of us are here stay
So treat every day like it’s a holiday
Until the day you slip away

My dear, my dear, no you don’t have to cry
That ain’t a pretty legacy to leave behind
Stop and smell the roses while you’ve got the time
Pretty soon you’ll be pushing up daisies where the sun don’t shine

Pretty soon you’ll be pushing up daisies where the sun don’t shine…

HELLO DDR'S (Dedicated Description Readers)!!

I’m currently stranded in a hotel in Orlando, Florida with my family. Everything is closed, and the surrounding area is flooded. We’re safe though, so we are grateful.

We’re also grateful that we still have Internet and can upload this video!

Hey, did you know “Insane” just broke 100 million views on YouTube? Crazy coincidence we would release the prequel at the exact same time, eh?

Anyway, sorry for the long hiatus. I promise we’re not lazy, we have just been very hard on music for some major IPs, so we can’t talk about it or tease it… we’re very proud of our new music though, and we’re excited for everyone to hear it! Care to guess who we’re working for?… we can’t confirm or deny, but ma
ybe you’ll be right! 👀

Thaaaanks!

I absolutely love the idea that Alastor when alive wore shoes with deer hoof marks on the soles. Because when he murders people it wouldn’t leave a normal shoe print, but deer prints instead, making it seem that the killer had somehow not left their prints at all, and that some deer just eventually approached the body (deer will approach carcasses to nibble on them and for their bones, as it’s free nourishment).

This ended up eventually backfiring because hunters ended up tracking those “deer prints”, leading to them shooting Alastor thinking he was a deer from it being dark, a secluded place where people aren’t usually there, and him being far away.

“A smile is a very important tool my dear.”

And that’s why he keeps multiple inside his shed in the middle of the woods.

The transition in flower allegories from “appreciate the little things in life” to “you’re gonna die soon, buddy” is so fitting for a serial killer like Alastor.

"My dear my dear, no you don't have to cry, that ain't pretty legacy to leave behind"

His voice is so fine in this line

2:11 I just love how this part is detailed. Yes, technically your blood has all the nutrients to grow a flower

I LOVE how Alastor plays with his victim here making him feel safe and relaxed only to be slowly leading him into his demise, even when he has made him scared that chorus part shows he doesnt want no long faces no matter what.

THE DETAILS ARE INCREDIBLE. Alastor skipping a little during the interlude while they're walking in the woods, the fact that he was killed in the rose garden, the flashes between demon and human, the ear twitch when he hears the dogs....wow. This was not on my October bingo card but here we are!! Welcome back, boys.

I love how this song portraits not only the victim but alastor too, in one of the lines his says "Soon i'll we be picking up daises where the sun don't shine" meaning he probably knew his fate was coming to a close, and wanted to kill one last person before his death

For anyone who doesn't know: "pushing up daisies" is a phrase meaning "dead and buried"

I love that second of Insane playing at the beginning! This feels like a prequel to it since Insane picks up right when he enters hell, which is super cool.

0:40 The song was released a relatively long time ago, and I just now accidentally read in a linguistic textbook that "to push up the daisies", in Cockney slang (the southern dialect of London), means "to go to the next world, to die". Of course, it was initially clear what Alastor was talking about, but I was interested in the very ORIGIN OF THE IDIOM. It's quite interesting

Here is an example from Charles Dickens (I think from "Great Expectations"): "She may have pulled me through me operation", said Mrs Fisher, "but streuth I'm not sure I wouldn't be better off pushing up the daisies, after all".

1:34 Interestingly, the use of "ain't" instead of "isn't"/ "am not" is also noted in Cockney

Cockney rhyming slang appeared in England in the 1840s. In the United States, especially in the West Coast underworld between 1880 and 1920, rhyming slang was sometimes referred to as Australian slang.

1:00 Love how comfortable this guy was following a total stranger (I assume) ALONE into the deep dark woods. 😅

I like how Alastor is casually leading him into the deep dark woods where literally everything bad happens in movies.

the way that alastors footprints are deer shaped made me think that this is exactly how the hunters tracked him down and was part of the reason for making them think hes a deer, amazing detail

I love the chorus

"My dear my dear there's no need to cry
Its not a prettiest legacy to leave behind"

Black Gryphon casually reminding people why he was THE OG singing voice of Alastor. Still the voice I remember. Man paved the way and I love how you still own this character. An inspiration <3 you've made an entire community come together again

The reason why Alastor in human version, has people’s mouths is because as you can see in the episodes and this good song, Alastor always smiles so that means that Alastor is obsessed with smiles so he takes people’s mouths (once he kills them) and hangs them up and it looks like there smiling. So that’s the reason why Alastor takes people’s mouth and then hangs them up. *Just to let y’all know if y’all didn’t know*
