Sabbatai Zevi - The False Messiah

Sabbatai Zevi was born in 1626 to a wealthy merchant family in Smyrna, a town on the west coast of Turkey known as Izmir today. He rose to be a charismatic Rabbi and Kabbalist who, in 1666, declared himself to be the Messiah. This eccentric mystic managed to attract over a million devotees during his lifetime. A remarkable achievement given this was about half of the Jewish population in the 17th century.

I wish you mentioned the dialogue between Zevi and Sultan Mehmed, who told Zevi that if he is indeed the messiah then he should have no problem getting executed since he could simply revive himself with a miracle, or he could admit that he was wrong and convert to Islam. While Zevi and his supporters "choose" the latter, he never embraced Islam and instead continued his activities in secret. Many of his followers in Turkey continued practicing his version of Judaism in secret for many centuries to come, many of them ending up becoming highly prominent figures in Ottoman/Turkish society.
