Two things: First, starting with the aorist makes good sense and it's also how the Polis Institute introduces Greek verbs as well.

Second, breaking things down into smaller and smaller chunks is getting you a lot closer to Krashen's "i + 1" principle for comprehensible input, which likely explains why students just find it so much more approachable.

I think that the more you apply this "i + 1" principle and introduce only one new thing at a time, the more success your students will have.
