If you own a Chinese laser cutter this little series of videos about me learning how to use the free software provided, may solve the problem of trying to learn from a virtually unreadable manual.
I am nothing to do with RD Works, I am not an instructor and I am no expert. This series will document the essential bits of many hours of trial and error

The slate that I can get locally in my town is awful for engraving but I can get granite tile in a color called "Absolute Black" and it's wonderful when engraved. The contrast is very high and there are very few light specks in the stone. I've done memorial stones for gardens, veteran appreciation plaques, wedding vows, etc. and it always turns out beautifully. I've also been successful a few times engraving photographs.

I work in a stoneshop and we have a 60W laser. We engrave in mostly black granite, and i have no problems getting nice photos, if the source picture is a decent quality. I have also done a lot of engraving on slate, mostly portugese, and it also takes a nice engraving. I did a lot of slate plates for a restaurant and it was on cleft italian slate. It looked god, but disappeared after they washed them 3-4 times in the industrial washer. The granite you engrave in this video is Black Galaxy from India, and in that material you will always have that blotchy areas where you engrave, it is just the structure of the material. Look for Absolute Black tiles, or scraps. It is a Indian black stone, and in that you will have the cleanest result in granite. The african Nero Zimbabwe stones are also ok, but more blotchy in the engraving.

Russ, my 60 watt factory tube froze and cracked so I had to buy a new one. 1200mm X 55mm compared to the old one 1000mm X 50mm. All of my old settings are no longer working. and I am getting some strange empty spots in some text on black granite. The empty spots are happening in the same place on different pieces. I am etching at 185mm/sec and 50% power. Any Ideas?
