Not long ago, Valencia was considered the best place to retire in Europe, but the cost of living skyrocketed, and retiring in Spain is no longer a guarantee of lower prices.

In Spain, a wave of anti-tourism protests might make expats reconsider their plans. Put that together with the higher cost of living in Valencia, and one might ask: Is it still worth the idea of moving to Valencia?

Is Valencia expensive? Is Valencia still a good place to live?

Today you will discover the answer to that, and we will also reveal some places not far from Valencia with MUCH lower cost of living and high quality of life. Cities like Castellón de la Plana, Sagunto, Gandia, and Puerto de Sagunto are now some fine destinations to retire in Spain.

🔎 EXCERPT 🔎
Is Valencia still the perfect retirement spot in Europe, or has it changed?
I talked to a dozen locals and expats to get a real update on this city that, only 2 years ago,
we told you was the best city to retire in Europe
But since then, big changes have happened all over Spain
With firsthand accounts from Valencia residents, I've uncovered what changed
How does that affect you?
and what alternatives to Valencia might be better for retirement.
Today you will discover all that.
But first, meet John, an expat who thought moving to Spain was a dream until...
He was attacked with water sprays while eating in a restaurant in Barcelona…
during the massive anti-tourist demonstrations that happened in the city.
Similar protests also happened in other famous Spanish cities like Mallorca and Malaga.
So I went for my sources to check if this wave of revolt is affecting Valência, the darling of expat retirees in Europe
He is what one of my sources told me:
“What happened in Barcelona is a few people sprayed water on a few tourists, big deal. Anyway, the situation there is way worse than in Valencia. No one is hostile or has a hostile attitude in Valencia against foreigners. The problem is the rent hikes."
And while this is not the only issue, probably is the most visible: the increasing housing costs.
Only 3 years later, the housing costs skyrocketed to 14.56 euros per square meter.
This is a 45% increase in only 3 years!
This is way above the increase in the average salary of the Valencian resident,
and yes, in good part this increase is due to a tremendous explosion in demand from expats and retirees willing to move to a sunny, warm place to enjoy their golden years.
The reason these huge protests happened in Barcelona but not in Valencia
is that in Barcelona the situation is even worse.
Entire districts of the city are completely taken over by Airbnbs, displacing locals and inflating the prices.
Nowadays, there are virtually no districts where someone can rent an apartment for less than 20 euros per square meter.
So did this price inflation make Valencia too expensive?
Is it still worth to move there for retirement?

I live in Florida, but I will retire in Spain in early 2026. Estoy enamorado de España y no puedo esperar a pasar el resto de mi vida en ese pais tan bello.

Great video.. on the comparison of Florida vs Spain cost of living, we should take into consideration Income tax, to be fair.. Income taxes in Spain are from another planet (from an American's perspective), including wealth taxes. Florida offers no state income tax, no wealth tax but high housing insurance costs.

Vivo en Tampa y los apartamentos más nuevos se alquilan por $2, 000 por 55 m2.

Why are they angry at the tourists.
Tourists don’t own Airbnbs.
It is their city council that is allowing owners to rent to tourists.
Why pick on poor tourists?

Hi, thank you for your video. May I ask which platform you were using to find the rentals? Thank you.

You should have made your study about Valencia better. In Valencia airbnb renting is regulated and not all areas in the center are aloud to rent in airbnb and only first floor apartments can be made to airbnb. Stupid to compare apartment in historic center in Valencia and recidencial area in Tampa, and say the apartment hasnt got pool, they didnt made pools 100 years ago and in the old center doesnt have even space for that. For around 1000e you can find 2 bedroom never apartments outside the center that has pools.

Excellent video. Do you have any similar suggestions for lower costs parts of Malaga or Andalusia (as these don’t have wealth tax)?

Visited both Valencia and Barcelona recently. Barcelona is an amazing city but everyone there is constantly worried about crime. It´s not a good feeling at all. Valencia is pretty and safe, clean (mostly), but really dull. Mallorca´s protests are ridiculous. They have nothing other than tourism and should be focusing their efforts on pressuring the government directly to regulate the number of flights and cruiseships bringing tourists to the island per day. Greed is the reason behind all of the problems and has nothing to do with tourists or foreigners.

So all the tourists will go elsewhere in Spain and Portugal. Smart.

Valencian (aka Catalan) is not a dialect, it's a separate language just as much as French or Portuguese

Better choose Cartagena, in case you want to safe money

HOW MUCH IS THE RENT OF A ONE STUDIO APARTMENT IN VALENCIA?

Sounds unreasonable tbh, Its companies and landlords buying up all the homes. Tourists create alot of jobs in Spain. Would they have a problem with tourists if there wasn't as many Airbnb's and the tourists stayed in hotels instead?

What is the need to retire to live in another country? Another country that you don't know, that you don't speak its language, with another culture, another lifestyle. Why not stay in your home country? Why ?
