Caecilian facts: they're amphibians! | Animal Fact Files

Caecilians look like worms or maybe even snakes, but they're neither! Caecilians are legless amphibians not closely related to any other living amphibian species. These awesome animals have greatly reduced eyes due to their underground lifestyle. They are found in tropical areas throughout most of the world, and some even live in water! Caecilians are the only amphibians with tentacles and they use these to sense their surroundings. Plus, they feed their babies with their own bodies!!

Scientific Name: Order - Gymnophiona
Range: Central and South America, Asia, Africa
Size: 4 to 60 inches (10-150cm)
Diet: earthworms, termites, caterpillars, snakes, fish, eels, and even each other
Lifespan: unknown (10+ years in captivity)

Cannot believe they can get up to 5 feet in length! That must be a sight to see, if they come up above ground. That's so cool they have tentacles too 😀 Thanks for another great video guys! 💚

I believe I may have encountered one of these in Tennessee. I heard screaming from children in the road in front of my house. I went out to see what was going on. They were going on about what appeared to me, to be a large worm in the road. Thinking I would show them the worm was harmless, I picked it up and thing became super aggressive, like a snake. I have never seen a worn react that way in my life. It startled me and I threw it down. And it probably traumatized those poor boys against worms for life. 😂

and in a wonderful piece of convergent evolution, as well as some unknown group of amphibians evolving into this form, an unrelated group of lizards did something very similar to become the legless amphisbaenia (apart from the genus Bipes, which retains tiny mole-like front legs)

Here we have an animal that can't see, can't tolerate the cold, can barely come up to the surface, and can't fit into any of the major categories of its own class!
