Most salamanders have a larval stage with external gill akin to that of an axolotl
what makes axolotl special is there inability to mature into a terrestrial salamander.
however when exposed to certain chemicals or when hybridized with tiger salamanders they can grow past the larval stage

Two of my axolotls NATURALLY morphed. They're basically weird colored tiger salamanders. My male had a female that he was paired with. Over the course of a few weeks, his gills shrunk and his caudal fin disappeared. His mate was perfectly fine, and the parameters of the tank were perfect. What most likely happened was that his thyroid gland (the gland that matures tissue with hormones, and makes most other amphibians morph) was abnormally large due to being hybridized with a tiger salamander generations ago. Before he morphed, though, he bred several times, and the axolotls that I kept morphed, too (the youngest one died when it was morphing, it's a very stressful process on their bodies) and the male I kept morphed, too, but at a much younger age (about a year old compared to the original male that morphed being 4), so he was a decent bit smaller that my 11 inch male, him being around 7 inches. Now they are both very healthy and the little one bites the air anytime I'm around, the big one mostly sits in the water dish or sleeps in his burrow. I love them both :))
