In model railwsus we are not as hard on our surfaces as they are mainly aesthetic.
My approach varies from yours for static grass and foam flock.
1. Apply PVA glue
2. Spread with a a brush
3 apply either flock
4 while the glue is still wet, apply watered down pva from a syringe or dropper. The wet glue base pulls the watered down PVA in with its own surface tention.
It works. No IPA or VARNISH needed.
Occasionally you get a break out but this can be controlled with a paper towel.
I only use sawdust on teased coconut fibre strips sprayed with adhedive to make hedges.
The sawdust looks more like leaves. 👍
Hope this helps.

To get ‘depth’ of colour with flocking, a little trick I’ve discovered is to put some green paint into your pva when covering the base to sprinkle your flock onto.

Foam flock looks like what just came out of my grinder. I'm not gluing mine to a board though.
I'll be sure to remember these tips, thank you.

The dead moth cracked me up, awesome that you left that in the vid. I really like the effect I get from the various lengths of static grass, but hate using the stuff as it’s so messy. You have got me thinking about using your range of foam flocks for my next project now.
Great vid, as always 👍🏻

Does the dead moth come standard with all your flocking products or does it cost extra?

with sawdust i find that you glue it first. then when its dried you do the wet work. the iso helps break the surface tension and lets the glue seap in and it buils a stronger bond. it just takes twice as long to prep than the foam.

MY MAN! I have been waiting to figure out how you did your glue sealant for almost a year. I just spent 2 weeks trying anything and everything with iso/glue and distilled water to get it to work. I just couldn't get it to mist no matter what i tried. Cutting the bottom of the hose is genius. Also I never considered adding a matte med to the glue. Thanks a ton! Now I'm off to find a spray bottle.

Oh for flock sake..!!
I keep meaning to get some foam flock just haven’t gotten round to it yet. Now I feel I’m going to have to put my hand in my pocket 😂😂
I think a touch of it here and there on my bases will lift them even more.
Great comparison video. Definitely given me some ideas to add another dimension to my bases.
Great stuff my friend

So I saw a video from the terrain tutor, and his solution to locking in flock was pretty simple. Use a course sand and use PVA to glue it to the surface of the terrain. This creates ground texture and can easily be dry brushed to add depth. Then, simply do what Luke is doing over the course surface. All the little nooks and crannies created by the course sand will hold the flock. Foam and sawdust work great and you lose a lot less flocking to flaking off. I don't know about the nylon stuff, never used it and the other vid didn't address it.

This is great for helping me decide which grass to use for my son's Xmas present - I'm making an Amazon rainforest.

Brilliant video! All these years I've been using static grass, but now I think I'll move on to foam flock (or maybe even a mix?). Thanks!!

Are you flocking kidding me? This video is great! Time flew by as a flock of geese in the flocky clouds.

Hey Luke, Thanks for the advice! Could you please make a vid where you show us how you would combine the 3 kinds of flock ?

Hi Luke, I had the same problem with the sawdust, but being a builder I have an unlimited supply of fine, medium and larger flakes. I found that the best way was to spray matt clear varnish and it doesn't discolour and can be done with more than one layer if required. I totally agree with Death Guard Dave that some paint in the pva does make a difference when using it for any reason. Albeit, too much pva on sawdust looses any texture, depending on the grade of sawdust.

Thanks Luke! I'm a noob to wargaming and am about to base my first battalion, so this is a huge help.

I used to use a mix of mulched dry grass clippings with the dust bits from lichen bags. I'd just spread white glue full strength where I wanted the depth to look like standing thick grass and dip the piece into a bag of the mix. It worked pretty well.
This was back around 40 years ago where the only stuff we could get in stores was the green dyed dust for train sets.
I'm loving that newfangled static flock device! Although it seems a bit like cheating haha.

Brilliant explanation, I have only used sawdust flock and wondered why it didn't last.
Not sure how I can get hold of some of your products being on the other side of the world.
Keep doing what you are doing thanks for the tips
