TIPS AND FAQ:
Bonus Tip: Hit up your local hardware store that cuts wood and ask if you can fill up a bucket with sawdust. My local just ended up giving me a huge bag that hardly fit in my car. Enough for a life time or to start a small business.
Bonus Bonus Tip: In order to avoid the awkwardness when they ask "what for?" say it's for "Hobby stuff, like model trains", everyone knows a weird guy who collects model trains.
FAQ:
When I mention quality paints, I'm referring to 'artist quality' paints (as opposed to 'student quality' paints). You want strong pigments and fast drying times if you want your flock to dry fast. Some paints are designed to dry slowly, some are designed to dry quickly. Do a quick google search and find out what paints are avalible to you and their drying times. I'm using Jo Sonja paints because they're fast drying and have strong pigments at about $6 a pop. Winsor and Newton paints have strong pigments and are designed to dry slowly.
You can use house paint as well - generally strong pigments and fast drying. You can buy house paint in sample pot sizes, and while it's more expensive upfront, you'll get more bang for your buck long term.

This changed everything for me. I'm annoyed with myself for not finding this video 4 years ago when you posted it. Thank you!

What I absolutely LOVE about your videos (besides your amazing skills and even better creativity) is this little "philosophical" touch you add to them.

Its really mind-opening (at least for me) and motivating.

Just the mentality of "so what, you will make something better." is a huge statement about how you view the creative process. I love it.

I have done this for a while now. Its so easy and the after an afternoon I can have an insane amount of tubs with every colour and scale imaginable. Also, I use cheap paints and if I need to I even water it down. I also do a little woodwork so I use the shavings from that. It looks great!

Thanks for making this video. It is going to save me a ton of money. I'm making a play mat for my grandchildren using a canvass drop cloth, flexible caulk and then adding grass, roads and a river. Then seal it really good. I already have bushes and small trees inserted and glued into 1X3" and 1X4" blocks. Sorry for the life story, I am really excited for this project.

After 40 years as a Model Train and wargamer, this is the first video that actually makes me contemplate making my own flock rather than buying it.

Got a huge bag of "flour" sawdust from a kitchen manufacturer. Because it's effectively sanded dust it's super fine and works perfect for n-scale. Such an easy way to make loads of ground cover with endless colour combinations.

I like the look of your flock, it looks more natural than others and your landscape looks fab with that application. Sawdust is easy to come by and less time consuming, this method has a big thumbs up from me, I can see me using this

I just wish you had more videos! I love the way you shot and edited this. There are very few if any tutorial videos that I watch multiple times. And no other tutorial video that I have ever enjoyed rewatching as much as this. Pure gold! Keep it up and keep making content!

Loved your video. And it looks like I’m not the only one- I had to read all the way to the end of the comments to find a single negative one. Thanks for the great flock advice- I have never used it before, but now you’ve got me eager to try making my own. Have a great weekend !
