"Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye" is a song with lyrics and music by Cole Porter and published by Chappell & Company. It was introduced in 1944 in Billy Rose's musical revue Seven Lively Arts. In the phrase "change from major to minor", Porter begins with an A♭ major chord and ends with an A♭ minor one, matching the words and music. The song has since become a jazz standard after gaining popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Many artists have replaced the apostrophe in "ev'ry" with an "e".
Ray Charles and Betty Carter is a 1961 album by Betty Carter and Ray Charles. The pair's recording of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" on the album topped the R&B charts. A 1988 CD/LP re-issue included three bonus tracks and the 1998 Rhino Records re-issue combined, on a single CD, the original Ray Charles and Betty Carter with the complete Dedicated to You.

Lyrics
Everytime we say goodbye, I die a little,
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little,
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know.
Think so little of me, they allow you to go.

When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor,

Everytime we say goodbye.
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it,
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it,
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor,
Everytime we say goodbye.

This song remind me of my grandma she was 76 years and died from cancer and everytime I visit her in the hospital and as visiting hours are over as I say good bye and walked away and looked back she always try to raise up from her bed to see us go made me die a little inside to leave her all alone....miss you mama.

This is sublime. Both Charles and Carter sing from their hearts, and the result make me want to hear them over and over--which I've done. Carmen McRae said, "There's really only one jazz singer—only one: Betty Carter." It was Miles Davis who suggested her pairing with Charles. The suggestion was inspired.

My dad would play this when I was ten years old, in 1963 when we lived in the Abe Lincoln Projects 135th St/Park Av, Harlem. It's such a beautiful song...

If I'm hearing the ending of this Ray Charles and Betty Carter version of the song correctly, the key changes from minor to major, which would make this arrangement unique. I think the change to major at the close is a stroke of genius because instead of ending on a sad note with finality to the goodbye, it ends with a touch of hope of meeting again.

And Betty comes in low underneath the melody and stays bluesy then rises melodically slowly she sings purposefully on the black piano keys to blend exquistly with Ray on the white keys their voices intertwine effortlessly eloquently and perfectly

The Parent Trap (1998) brought me here, I always thought for years that this was Joe Cocker and was somewhat shocked to find out this classic was done by the one and only Ray Charles, this man was so diverse in his musical gifts and skills, he was truly a genius, may he rest in peace.

This song is a little before my time since I was born in the fifties but it is beautiful. The first time I ever heard it was in the movie Parent Trap with a young Lindsay Lohan. I just watched it a few nights ago and decided to look this song up. I'm glad I did.

I have known this song from a long time ago, but I just knew this version recently, thanks to Spotify's recommendation. I really like this version. Their voice is so hypnotizing.

I love this song. particularly when he adds an "and", with an adversative sense and full of swing, before "When you near there's such air of spring about it". Note that when Betty sings, the word "and" does not appear. This strophe and "There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor, Every time you say good bye." are the most tender, for my opinion.
