In today's video we take a look at a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V8 engine. The customer complaint is that the check engine light is on and the motor is running very rough. Using a scan tool we find multiple trouble codes for misfires, mass air flow sensor and oxygen sensors. We are also told that this truck had been involved in an accident and had a pretty major collision. Follow along as I take you step by step through the diagnostic procedure and see if we can fix this truck!

Retired GM tech here. Retired in 2019 after about 40 years, most of it drivability and electrical. Been through this type of battle many times. I send my respect to this tech as this is so difficult under constant pressure of more than one problem at a time, keeping the customer happy, trying to stay ahead of the other vehicles to fix, and trying to be as good as Perry Mason on finding all the bad guys. Very tough job and mostly under appreciated. No wonder nobody wants to go through this type of work as a job anymore. Well done! :)

I am not a motor mechanic by profession but I love fixing my vehicles because it is hard to find honest and skillful people like you. Electronics is my weak side but thanks to videos like this I find my self prepared to go into electronic diagnosis! I must also thank Ivan (PHAD), Eroc O (SMA), Danner (scanner Danner) educating the general public for free while taking their own time. Very Much Appreciated Sir!

Eric, I don't know why you were apologizing for not videoing the entire process. What you did was terrific and really it identified what can happen when a person simply starts replacing parts without diagnosing the concern. You had two wiring issues and a self-inflicted wound by the customer. Three things wrong with this truck but your diagnostic process solved them and kudos to you. Loved every minute of this video.

Wow! Super content. Truly an advanced class in diagnostics. No apologies needed on your part for any of this video.

Man, I don't even know where to begin! Thank you for staying committed to troubleshooting and not relenting. You did a fantastic job and followed a very technical approach rather than just replacing parts. Thanks again for bringing us this awesome content.

This guy is super thorough and very exacting in his diagnostic efforts. Mechanics like him are next to impossible to find.

You were called in after 2 others couldn't fix the original problem. The owner replaced the original oxygen sensors with the wrong sensors adding to the misfires. This video is the #1 repair of all your other repairs that I have watched and learned from. You are blessed with patience, understanding and determination to fix the problems. Thank you 👍

Eric, my respects for you. Other mechanics probably just give up at it. But you don’t give up and keep on goin until is fixed. And thank u for sharing your knowledge. You’re a great mechanic 👍

Excellent vid! Real good example of what a diagnostician could run into out there in the field. Plus your description of the two types of sensors AFR and O2 was super informative. Rock on, Texas!!!

One hour long video and I watched every second of it. I actually had to rewind some sections multiple times to really follow. I was not watching this to repair any vehicle but man, this was not only entertaining but very much educational. Especially if you understand a little problem solving stuff like I do.
I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I learnt a lot from these videos you make.
You're a true instructor.
You should have Netflix show.

Thank you for taking your time in making these videos. We can tell you put in alot to get these videos to us.
Thank you!

Thank you for showing this level of context and content. You are the man! I like that you show that mistakes are made and not trying to cover them up. We are all human. Great job sticking out with it and figuring this thing out. I greatly appreciate you and your work!

True Fact: when running rough or idling bad fuel will enter the crank case and it will delute your motor oil so it is recommended to do and oil change. Also this applies to miss fires

Yep if nothing else we seen a great way to load test and continuity test the purple wire with your circuit tester. Keep them coming please. We appreciate it takes a long time to put these recordings together for our benefit and thank you

You did a excellent job on this video. I am a shade tree mechanic (since the 60's) and try to keep up with automotive changes. You do a A+ job trouble shooting. One ting I have learned as a electrical technician for over 40 years. Is to do the tug test most of the time when working near connectors. Seeing that wiring harness, that would be the first thing before I even pierced the wires. Saved me a lot of time finding the problem(s)

Man, thank you so much for providing these videos for us. This type of deep dive, watching the whole diagnostic/repair process while you explain the motivation and logic behind each step, is like having an apprenticeship under a master mechanic. I learn more from the methodology and just watching you work through the processes than any books or even hands-on training I've received over the years. You've reminded me to think in an engineering mindset when working on vehicles, and my skills and ability to track down problems has improved so much more by watching your videos than it did through my entire time getting my certifications or during on the job training. It's an invaluable resource, and you're an incredible asset to the community for the insight and knowledge that you provided. I can't thank you enough personally, and also on behalf of my customers who have finally gotten fixes for their problems after many other techs failing to properly assess the problems. They benefitted from the information I've gotten from you, and probably saved themselves thousands in additional trips to the shop.
