In this informal interview with documentary-maker Michael Parfit, Professor Roger Crisp (Philosophy, Oxford) explains why it's not an easy task for philosophers to have an influence in the 'real world' - though he thinks philosophy certainly produces imperceptible benefits in the 'real world'.

I've pointed a number of introspective/thoughtful people to SEP articles on philosophical themes that always held their interest and that they had no idea were extensively and formally discussed or written about elsewhere. Most of these people couldn't so much as get through a quarter of those articles and follow along. If the average philosopher responds to this by suggesting that the fault lies with those introspective/thoughtful people who are philosophically untrained, widening the appeal of formal philosophy becomes that much more difficult a task.

Overspecialization + Publish vs. Perish = an awful way to cultivate interest from outsiders and non-philosophers.
