Basics of Networking - 2 - Introduction to Ports

In this video we are going to be talking about Ports. You can think of ports as exact house or apartment numbers. So IP addresses represent the city and street name and the port number represents the exact house number you are living in.

So when a computer tries to connect or communicate with another computer it not only needs the IP address but the Port as well.

So whenever we are making an application that connects one computer to another we have to make sure that we are not using the common ports.

I would define ports as all possible ways of entry into a house e.g door, window, broken roof etc. And IP has the exact house

Ports are more like electrical, plumbing, garbage and other utilities... where services come into the house at that address.. or in this case the into the machine with the ip address.

Ip address : unique to every network interface and like a unique house address
Whereas
Port : different doors for different services

The difference between a port and a MAC address would be, first of all, that the MAC address is found at the Data-Link layer and the port is found at the transport layer, correct? I'm also thinking of another difference: MAC deals with hardware and ports deal with software. Please correct if I'm mistaken.
