You honestly can’t listen to Mahler’s symphonies without having listened to the Songs of a Wayfarer. This song set is literally the basis for his entire first symphony and all his other symphonies to come. All of Mahler’s music is the same if you peel back the layers. The same man sharing his life with the world while discussing different elements of the human existence. He always writes the same motifs and lines but he then twists them in a way that is completely different from before… so inspiring and emotionally gripping!

This brought tears to my eyes... A Mahler fan since 2004... An excellent recording of an excellent piece.

Belle œuvre de jeunesse de Mahler, sur des textes très névrosés (on est loin de la contemplation lointaine du désespoir des Chants de la Terre). L'orchestration claire et les timbres originaux avèrent déjà le génie. Superbe interprétation d'Herman Prey, le baryton à la voix chaude qui a illuminé les années 60 et 70. Dommage qu'ici la partition ne soit pas en phase avec la musique

Prey tended to be over-shadowed by DF-D but he had the more beautiful voice particularly in the upper range which many tenors would envy, and he was always a joy to listen to.
