I am finally getting the chance to do my no spoiler review of Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames! Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is a great debut for the Canadian author! Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is a romp and stomp good times that reminds me a lot of a good old fashioned Dungeons and Dragons adventure.. Okay, so other than Motley Crue, what music references did I miss in this book?

This book checks so many boxes for me. Grizzled old veterans, humor, and let us not forget Owlbears! Most importantly, in the midst of all of the tropes, which I loved, is the authors ability to write incredibly heartfelt moments. This is one of those books that just feels like it was written for me, and because of that I consider Eames one of my top 5 favorite authors.

I took a break from reading through college and grad school and when I finally got back into fantasy in 2018, this was one of the first books I read and I really like this book. I think it's fun and it's light on its feet. I never felt bogged down in lore or remembering 30+ characters. Just a well written quest with some cool ideas peppered throughout. It was the right story at the right time for me, big big fan of this book.

a WEIRD surprise character that gave me the feels was the two headed troll?? or giant or whatever. where one was blind and kinda simple, and the other described awful horrible events in a more positive beautiful light for the other

Yay 😀 I also had such a good time reading Kings of the Wyld. I was surprised how much warmth was in this story. And personally, the humor REALLY worked. Is it perfect? No (needed to be a duology), but gosh, it was FUN ♥️

Important point about expectations creating a lot of our perception as we read, and I think your review is spot-on. I think it's a total misnomer that only literary fiction can be profound or elicit deep emotions. I think the best literature lures people in with the light-hearted entertainment in Kings of the Wyld, and then gives us more than we bargained for.

I read this book last month. I really enjoyed it. I had just finished Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff, which was a very gloomy (but awesome) grimdark tale. I was looking for something funny and lighter and it really hit that spot for me. There were lots of laugh out loud moments for me too. Like when some characters go through a mirror and when one really doesn't want to throw up and even just figuring out what a pool is. I didn't go in expecting The First Law and I think that helped with my enjoyment. I'm definitely going to read Bloody Rose. I did feel a little sad when this one ended because I would love to hear more about Clay and friends. Great review!

When they initially run into Moog he starts throwing objects into his bag before they escape the tower. One of those items is an Onyx Cat figure. That has to be a Guenhwyvar reference from Drizz't?

If you like it a bit more epic and serious, I'd recommend reading Bloody Rose some time. I actually like it a bit more, not sure the general consensus
