There are over 5,000 discovered exoplanets, but a lot of them have bad names. Luckily, that's changing with NameExoWorlds. But how do you name an exoplanet? And why haven't you heard of this before?

With all this in mind, what would you name an exoplanet if you decide to enter the next nameexoworlds (whenever that is)

It's so sad that there will never be a FamilyGuy star being orbited by its 5 planets (Peter, Lois, Chris, Stewie and Brian) and its dwarf planet Meg

These exoplanet names sounds like what google recommends to you as a "strong" password

I can't be the only one whose wanted to name a planet Gagarin, and if it has a moon, name that Laika.

I cannot fathom why people would be opposed to naming exoplanets. It's way easier for me to get excited over an exoplanet named Enkidu than it is for me to remember one called ZORP-2002-12851-K.

The Romans naming Planets: This looks huge, let's name it King Of The Gods (Jupiter)

Modern Astronomers naming Exoplanets: OGLE-05-390L b

In general, from your videos, thanks for being a genuine astronomy channel that doesn't use false information and stuff

I love how games like no mans sky can generate quadrillions of different names for every single possible planet yet astronomers think we cant even name a couple thousand irl

The idea of having two names, one formal and one scientific, is the same thing that happens in biology. Academic papers use the scientific name for an organism, while the public uses the common name. There is no confusion there, so why is it not the same for exoplanets?

I wish it was easier to name these, allowing the general public to be able to submit name ideas more easily would really add a lot more interest to astronomy

Hopefully systems like TRAPPIST-1, HD 189733, AU Mic, Alpha Centauri and TrES-2 will get a name soon. Those systems are so popular yet the IAU hasn't named them yet

Let's name one George.
Because:
1. It's literally just a normal name.
2. It would be named after a historical and culturally significant person (Washington)
3. I think it's funny.

The process for naming planets is too slow. They need to relax the rules, especially the ones about cultural significance and having a fan base. At this rate, we will never be able to name all of the exoplanets. And why does the IAU insist that we try to apply earth culture to alien worlds? Why not let space have totally foreign names? It’s alien after all, it doesn’t have to bear resemblance to anything from earth.

The lack of joke names doesn't make some names any less funny, like Liesma(star) and Staburags(planet)
Ligma Starbags😂

Honestly, the idea of needing permission for indigenous language names is stupid (imo).

How is that any different from literally any of the other languages or cultures?
