In my opinion, to see the real behavior and therefore the real protection, it would take really 0 day ransoware, without deactivating any protection component.

Avast ransomware shield strict mode is impossible to evade (unless there is an exploit in it) because it will ask you whether you want to allow any application through.

Avast did great given the situation as its file shiled was off. Few AVs do not allow to test Protected folder like feature alone. That is when you turn off the file shield the protected folder will be turned off as well. I hope that I could see Norton's AV test someday. It has a similar feature of protected folder too. I wonder how well it performs in your test scenarios.

Maybe you can use Avast Geek setting area to just disable signitures, if you disable file shield you can disable other 0 day components like heuristics
