For £400 I'd stick a new computer in that beautiful case.

why would a PC ever need to be drop proof?

Well, yeah! I think most of us have learned a long time ago about Apple's obsolescence practices. In most cases with them, you're buying a new computer from them about every 3 years. I mean, one could arguably go into 7 full years... but that is conditional that s/he bought the top of the line machine at that particular time and maxed out the ram and other applicable peripherals. Take the sad story of my Performa 6200 CD... Got it in '96. Got the base model. 8 megs ram, system 7.5.1 out of the box. The next OS that came out the following fall wouldn't work without a ram upgrade. Put it off and put it off until Apple abandoned System 7 all together in 1999. Finally bit the bullet and maxed it out in 2000. Put OS 9.1 on it. The nice part was that it was only a $20 upgrade for the ram since I waited so long, and the OS, well, got from a friend for free ( I know, terrible).

But I didn't learn my lesson there. By 2001, the Performa was no longer suited for the Internet. Got a G3 iMac (since they were cheaper than the prized G4 at the time). Big, fat mistake. That thing had so many incompatibility issues with things it wasn't funny. Had a good run with it, though. Took me through great and not so great times with my tech ventures. The moral: The G3 was pretty much useless by 2006. So, got a good 4.5 year run out of that... Hmm... About the same for my Performa... odd, huh?!

Still didn't learn my lesson. Skipped to a mid-range G5 this time. That was in '06. Served me well for... You guessed it about a little over 4 years! Hated its noisy fan and power-hungry processor the whole time I owned it. Did some pretty intense stuff with it though; got to say.

Fast forward to 2010... Got a high end MacBook Pro that I still use to this day... wait! That's 6 years this time! Not to mention... I can still put an Apple-supported OS on it... hmm...

Oh well. Why I'm telling you all this: Apple has never really banked on a lucrative parts business. They made their money on their software early on. Now that the markets have changed, you kind of see the same kind of obsolescence practices in their i-devices. With the lesser popular ones being almost fully abandoned in only... again! FOUR years. Pretty sad.

But, I feel your pain. I am no stranger to Apple and their elitist hardware mentality. Out with old; in with the new. That's the way with them and likely, that is the way they will always be.
