What other people fail to realize is this ritual of saying goodbye to material things can also spur someone to let go of something they have been holding in their hearts for a long time. This is why I love Marie's method, she uses the idea of organizing mundane stuff for us to be mindful of the not so mundane stuff about our lives as well.

This really “sparked” my emotions and hit home for me. I watched my mother accept family members things/antiques and hold them for decades because she felt responsible for them. The person who gave the items were long gone but mom still burdened herself with all the baggage left to her. I have done similar but on a much smaller scale, I tried to learn from my mothers experience. Marie hit it home when she mentioned the word guilt. There have been many times I have been close to letting something go and the guilt sets in and I put the item back to spend more time languishing in a box or to collect dust on a shelf. This is truly an exercise of letting go, releasing, and clearing the way for a better future.

My mother passed away and had section 8 housing. Had to box all her stuff and store it at a relatives house. Going through all the boxes now. Thank you Marie Kondo for your advice its made this process so much easier. Western civilization has offered no advice and I appreciate the philosophies youve shown us. Arigato hontoni.

Hi Marie, I loved how this was highlighted in your Netflix show, discarding our things is to be done with love and gratitude, and it is about letting go with gratitude. So many do not respect their possessions and throw things away without any regard. Giving Thanks provides closure and allows you to become more mindful of what you keep. I also like how keeping ones home is not about 'de-cluttering and getting rid of everything' but rather about being mindful of what we do have, having gratitude towards what we have and connecting with what sparks joy even if we have something for functional purposes. Thank you for sharing your teachings :-)

can we all collectively agree that it is a sin to have a translator dub over her voice? it makes me awash with so much calm and life

I didn’t understand it for a long time and then it just clicked! So I filmed myself decluttering and now moved house 3 times in 2 months and I can’t believe how much stuff I still goes more decluttering, letting go & doing up the new house for a fresh future 🎉🌸

This has helped quite a lot when it comes to letting go of some of the shirts and pants I've had since childhood...very few of them fit anymore and I wasn't holding onto them for any good reason [other than that until recently I've been non-stop moving houses since 2019].

I felt much better saying thank you to my old phone case before throwing it away. Didn't feel right to just throw away something that's serviced me for so long, without a second thought. I honestly think it's Toy Story that's made me imagine that material things also have feelings.

I have this game called battleship and it's been with me for a very long time. Letting go of it is going to become the most challenging thing for this game.

Hmm, I still have a problem sorting sentimentals, especially memories of a loved one.
