I would suggest using Durabond any time you are are finishing over an odd surface, like concrete, block, wood, painted walls, ect. But only for the bed coat. I would also prefer it for all prefilling but like he said the other hot mud will work okay for that. Durabond has a lot more glue in it that makes it much better for such things. Bed coat only though. You don't want to have to sand that stuff. You'd be amazed at what you can do with some Durabond and fiberglass mesh. It really help when the top paper has been pulled off of some drywall, like when removing wallpaper.

DIY Drywaller here. Hot mud is great once you learn how and when to use it. All the stuff you mentioned I too have experienced. You produce great content from your years of experience.

You are very right about the dirty water will change the set-up time I have told several people this and they don't seem to understand

I love durabond for plaster wall repairs or when i tie drywall to old plaster. But, i only use it deep and never as finish mud. Bob P taught me that trick.

In Louisiana, 20 minute mud is more like 10-15 minute mud. Hot temperatures speed up setting/working times

Great content as always!
I’m far from a pro and have experienced many of the problems you just described over the past couple months of renovating🤦🏻‍♂️…..and now I know why lol

I used Easy Sand 45 for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was a bit scared I was gonna screw it up. I had to prefill some wall to ceiling corner joints because the original installers didn't take the drywall to the edge on the ceiling, and left a 1/2 inch gap. Not sure if that's common practice, or not, but I prefilled so my tape had something to adhere to just in case. I'm glad you mentioned the P-trap drainage issue too because I had to poor the dirty water in the sink because it was either that, or dig a hole, and bury it in the backyard, lol.

Great review of the must dos. Thank you. This was ideal timing for me. I’m a tradesman, but not a drywaller. This refresher should lead to better results on this week’s repair projects.

I love mesh tape's low profile but it's vey helpful to hear that hot mud is essential for application.

Great video Guy. Your explanations are right on the money. I agree with everything you said! Rock on...

I avoid using hot mud when I can as a DIYer. The 90/45/20 etc yeah, it sets up, but it's still best to let an all day cure (especially for prefilling, it's great for that). There's not much I need done that fast as I'm not a contractor.

I've used all purpose over mesh just fine, but I can see why hot mud is best for mesh. It's rock hard when applied properly. Basically, patches and pre filling is it's best use for a home DIYer.

Also Easy Sand 😂, it's a bear to sand.

I always wash my tools outside never using customers thinks because potential blame for clogging toilet or sink is not my wishes

The pros make it look so easy 😭look how smooth and easy it goes on. No uneven spots no lines.

I learned this first from tiling thinset that also sets up under water. First I scrape what I can into garbage and then use a bucket of water and brush to wash up. You can pour off the water once solids have settled. There's always a sizable solid mass at the bottom that would've been down somebody's drain.
