If you suspect that the popcorn ceiling was put on before 1980 then it may contain asbestos. The video says to scrape it off and test a small sample. What they fail to tell you is that you really need to wet that down before scraping it so if it is asbestos that dust doesn't get everywhere. Spray a small amount of water on the area and scrape it into a ziplock bag and seal it up. Wouldn't hurt to have a respirator on while doing this as well just in case some residual dust gets in the air and then vacuum the area afterwards. After all you are working from the top down so stuff can fall. Just a safety recommendation...

I removed my popcorn ceiling and a buddy let me use a scarper that you can attach a bag so it wont make a mess. Made it much easier on the clean up.

If you put one long plastic sheet on the whole floor, then afterwards you could just take all the corners of the plastic and fold them together to make almost like a plastic bag of sorts, making the cleanup much easier.

I saw a video and the guy got a shop vac and duck taped a long putty knife to the end of the hose of the shop vac, and it worked great and no big mess. I’ll be trying it soon

Tip....put a little fabric softer in the water....smells good and keeps it wet longer to scrap off
