I Always have walked closest to the street when I was with my girlfriends back 45 + years ago and wife now of 41 years. Always! I was told as a young boy by my dad & grandpa. It’s expected and becoming of a young man to do so! Respect your woman!

Yes, a gentleman ALWAYS walks closest to the street when walking with a lady. If he is smart, he also uses an umbrella to shield her from the snow/water/ice that comes out from passing traffic.

He is correct about walking on sidewalk CLOSEST TO THE TRAFFIC. Being raised in the south and residing in the north, I observed that the northern gentlemen lack this part of "gentleman training". Mr. Mount is a true gentleman.🤗

Think that's more of an issue between the generations and reflects on upbringing rather than geography. Most of the men I know position themselves so I'm in the protected position when walking but I'm "une femme d'un certain age".

Sorry darlin' you're mistaken. Some northern men still do walk on the side closest to the traffic, but now most things are so much more casual. It all depends on how they are raised.
